SAVE THE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ACT

The government’s aggressive push to change Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act - a crucial safeguard against racism and hate speech - is another attack on multicultural Australia and the latest capitulation by Malcolm Turnbull to his rabid right wing, One Nation and a narrow section of the media.

The Greens say NO to racism, and will never accept these attempts to make it easier for Australians to be racist. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with multicultural Australia against bigotry and hate speech.

We will save the Racial Discrimination Act from Malcolm Turnbull and his right wing mates by:

  • Running a national campaign demanding no change to Section 18C, delivered via online, press and outdoor ads in key locations.
  • Producing a powerful video story explaining why it’s so important to protect the Racial Discrimination Act. This will be delivered to key decision makers in this issue, like Malcolm Turnbull and Nick Xenophon.
  • Leading a national inquiry into how we can celebrate and strengthen Australian multiculturalism.

PROTECT THE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ACT

The government’s aggressive push to change Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act – a crucial safeguard against racism and hate speech – has been defeated in the Senate after a groundswell of community support for these important protections.

This was another attack on multicultural Australia and another capitulation by Malcolm Turnbull to his rabid right wing, One Nation and a narrow section of the media.

You only need to look at the politicians pushing to water down Section 18C – Peter Dutton, Pauline Hanson, George Brandis – to realise this threat is not over.

Call on Malcolm Turnbull to promise that there will be no more attacks against the Racial Discrimination Act.

Over the next few months, we will  be working to ensure the Racial Discrimination Act is safe from further attacks from Malcolm Turnbull and his right wing mates by:

  • Running a national campaign demanding the Prime Minister promise there will be no changeto Section 18C, delivered via online, press and outdoor ads in key locations.
  • Producing a powerful video story explaining why it’s so important to protect the Racial Discrimination Act. This will bedelivered to key decision makers in this issue, like Malcolm Turnbull and Nick Xenophon.
  • Leading a national inquiry into how we can celebrate and strengthen Australian multiculturalism.

YOUR STORY OF RACISM

While the debate over the Racial Discrimination Act has raged, we have been hearing horrific stories of the effects of racism from many, many communities right around the country. Sadly, these stories are increasing in prevalence and frequency.

It’s clear that the government has not experienced the sort of hate speech and bigotry that millions of Australians are exposed to, so we need to make them aware of the importance of the Racial Discrimination Act.

Share your story of racism with us, and we will present the most powerful stories to those MPs — like Turnbull, Dutton, Hanson, Bernardi and Morrison — to show them the importance of these protections.
